
Former Baltimore Orioles pitcher Brian Matusz has passed away at the age of 37. Matusz, who was drafted by the Orioles with the fourth overall pick in the 2008 MLB draft, spent eight seasons with the team, making 279 appearances, including 68 starts, between 2009 and 2016.
During his time with the Orioles, Matusz was a reliable left-handed arm out of the bullpen, earning a 3.32 ERA over 186 appearances from 2013 to 2015. He also had success against notable opponents, including Hall of Famer David Ortiz, who batted just .138 against Matusz.
The Orioles organization remembered Matusz fondly, stating, “Our hearts are heavy tonight as we mourn the passing of former Oriole, Brian Matusz… He dedicated his time to connecting with any fan he could, was a cherished teammate, and always had a smile on his face”.
Matusz’s MLB career concluded with a 27-41 record, 4.92 ERA, and 462 strikeouts. He also made a single appearance for the Chicago Cubs in 2016.
The cause of Matusz’s death has not been disclosed. He is survived by his family and loved ones, who are in the thoughts and prayers of the Orioles organization and fans.
