Ohio Woman, 75, Killed in Tragic Pig Attack on Christmas Day
A shocking and devastating incident occurred on Christmas Day in Pataskala, Ohio, where 75-year-old Rebecca Westergaard Rigney was found dead on the front steps of her home on Mink Street.
According to authorities, Rigney’s body was discovered with severe leg injuries, and an investigation revealed that she was attacked and partially eaten by two pigs that belonged to a neighbor.
The incident came to light when authorities conducted a welfare check on Rigney’s property after she failed to attend Christmas festivities at her niece’s house in Norton, Ohio. Upon entering the residence, officers found a large pig inside and later discovered at least two additional pigs at the neighbor’s property.
The Licking County Coroner’s Office confirmed that Rigney’s death was accidental, caused by “bleeding out due to extensive superficial injuries inflicted by livestock.” Rigney reportedly had existing health issues.
The pigs’ owner has been informed that the animals will be quarantined until further notice, but no criminal charges have been filed. Pataskala Police Chief Bruce Brooks described the incident as a “horrible, horrible situation,” highlighting the unusual nature of the attack.
“This is an unprecedented situation for us,” Brooks said. “If it was a pit bull or a Rottweiler, we would have a clear answer immediately. However, dealing with farm animals is a different scenario.”
Neighbor David Mullings expressed his shock and confusion, stating, “It was pretty crazy, wild because there’s not just wild pigs roaming. I’ve never seen pigs except for the market down the street, so it’s very confusing. This is a very quiet neighborhood.”
